Release 4 – soft launch

Available now.

I’ve updated the download page to now point to Release 4. You can begin the download process via torrent here.

You can also grab the airports I’ve added to X-Plane, many of which are not on the gateway, as I’m using the Beta and can’t submit them. These airports are all using default assets, so won’t require any other installations. Just drop them into your Custom Scenery folder.

This is an entirely new release, as there’s too many changes to patch. It will feature all the previous patches and the recent updates I’ve blogged about.

If you don’t mind downloading a lot of data to get these changes, then go right ahead. It should all work fine, but early adopters will need to help me identify any major issues that are present. I’ve made the best effort to fix everything!

Probably 95% of the ortho is unchanged from Release 3. So if you’re entirely happy with it, then you may not be missing out on much new stuff. But here’s a summary of what’s changed.

A basic summary of changes

All new scenery for the Chatham Islands:

Updated ortho photos

Tweaks to many areas. Entirely updated and corrected scenery for Milford Sound and an updated Queenstown. Updated areas of Auckland, Christchurch, Whanganui, Rotorua, Napier and more.

Shoreline water masking

Every shore has been masked to fade into the sea. This means a lot more ortho is visible, such as water colour, beaches, sand bars etc. I have also added custom masking for many harbours and inlets. You will now see channels and harbours in much more detail. A known trade off is that on surf beaches, you will be able to see some surf frozen in time.

An all new mesh

Featuring terrain decal bump mapping and shadows. Custom mesh patches were applied to several airports. (NZFH, NZRV, NZMB etc). This should resolve mesh issues on NZWN and NZMB that broke some users experience.

I’ll be seeding this torrent as best I can, so give it a go and please report any issues in the comments below.

On top of this ortho, you may want to run custom scenery packs for specific areas:

to name a few…

Finally, a big thank you for all your support!

  1. Thank you so much for your continued work on this Ortho package! NZ is one of my favorite places to fly because of it in X-Plane. I am downloading now and will then seed for some time to come.

One question: I’ve extracted my overlays for your v3 Release from AIPilots UHD mesh for NZ. Is that what you use as well for the overlays that are offered for download, or do you have another (better?) source?

    • The overlay is basically just default data – so no change there. You an continue to use the R3 overlay and the UHD overlay. The only addition is the Chatham Island region. TBH if you really want overlay for Chatham Islands, forego the overlay and use the custom scenery for Chathams on the .Org site. He’s hand placed each tree and the roads in the default overlay are quite inaccurate.

  2. I Can upload onto mega once its downloaded

  3. Great! I’m looking forward to downloading the whole set – only got the Chatham Islands completed as of now.
The new mesh, improved ortho photos and coastal masking have made a big difference. The smallest Islands have much better cliff edges: the Mangere group in particular looks a lot more like it does in real-world photos. The new ortho photo for Pitt Island shows the airstrip better than before, too.

  4. Being so far from home presently, your incredible effort single-handedly transports me back to the glorious Southern Skies of my homeland, and NZ has never looked better. Please know the difference you make and how much it’s appreciated. I can’t thank you enough.

  5. Good job. Thanks a lot. 🙂

  6. I finished downloading all sceneries and unfortunately there seem to be a couple of problems. I’ve uploaded the results of the tile validation here:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/z8xxoe9m5d3wkpv/validations.txt?dl=0

Maybe this is because of the separation of tiles into packages? The problems seem to appear mostly for tiles that appear in more than one packages. I am not sure how to bring these together (what to overwrite).

    • There is one tile in Wellington that is also in Tasman. It joins the North and South Island. They are identical, so it shouldn’t matter.

Many of those errors look fine – extra files that are left over, many missing images are actually not needed – not sure what is pointing to them. Some of the ones listed as missing are actually not found in that tile, but the previous tile.

      • Thanks. I will try the tiles reporting missing textures in the validation report to see if they actually trigger any problems in X-Plane. I’ll report back if they do.

  7. Good Morning Sir. I am very new to the concept of torrent files. I love X Plane and would like to download the North Island scenery. As I live in Northland I only have ADSL service. I think I have qbittorrent working correctly but it is saying that this is going to take some 20 days. Would that sound about right???? Very Many Thanks… David

    • Hello! It sounds like you are most of the way there, if you have the torrents running in a torrent application.

However, 20 days sounds far too long. On ADSL you should probably expect between 12-200 hours depending on your speed. In the torrent application you should see an indication of whether it is able to make connections with other people to start downloading from them. If there is a problem, it might be related to a firewall blocking these connections from being made. This would depend on what internet security you are using.

For example, in my torrent system, there is a green tick in the bottom right corner that reports that the network is performing correctly. It becomes a red cross, and I can click on it, if the connections to the outside world are blocked for some reason. Typically any internet security might be the culprit, and you might need to add a rule to allow the torrenting system to navigate past the firewall. I should probably write up a quick blog on this. 🙂

In the options check that download speed is ‘unlimited.’ Also check that you’re not going to blow out your internet service bandwidth limit, otherwise you’ll need to a pay a penalty to your ISP.

Finally – give it some time. Often the torrent programme will look terrible for a few hours and then magically latch on to the trackers and find lots of connections all of a sudden.

      • Thank you very much for your prompt and informative reply. Before I bother you any further, let me hit the books and try to learn more about what is going on..In my mind the concept of torrents has always been down at the dark end of the Internet where the Pirates, Dragons, and Hackers live.. Time to learn more…Thanks again … D.

      • Yes, this is perhaps one of the minority legal uses of torrenting!

    • Actually, looking at my peers in BitTorrent, I think I see which one you are. You either have an issue that is blocking the download, or very poor internet speeds.

You can email me at wichid at gmail dot com and we can discuss it further.

  8. This really is a magnificent upgrade; in particular, the coastlines are just brilliant.

  9. Many thank you’s for making this scenery available!
Have waited for the new release (R4) and have now downloaded South Island Canterbury …. Question, do i have to download the terrian patches or are they included in the new download?
    Cheers Malcolm

  10. One thing tonight didn’t look quite as I expected: the sandy areas around Cape Farewell seem to have acquired a very green tinge in this version of the ortho photos – quite different from their colour last time around. Is this realistic?
I haven’t yet flown all the way from Cape Farewell to Karamea to see if there’s a tile-boundary colour change visible somewhere along the way, but I can do that tomorrow.
Other than this minor issue, the coastline is fantastic.
    Hope this helps,
    – Chris

  11. The last days I downloaded the scenery packages. But trying to unzip the files I encounter many CRC- en dataerrors. In minimal one case 7-Zip stops the unzipping due to an unknown error. What can I do about it?

    • I have restarted the download with an other torrent client on my dekstop PC instead of using the downloadmanager of the QNAP NAS. It looks like I do not have errors anymore. The first two downloads were 100% correct.
